“Why we loved living at 1131 Shrader Street”
A letter to perspective owners of 1131 Shrader St, SF.
We had been living in Berkeley since 1976. During that time, we came to SF frequently for concerts, the museums, the great parks, and other fun events. After retirement we began thinking that we wanted to have a second home in San Francisco. It was the perfect time to find that second home. A friend who lived in SF said she knew exactly the neighborhood where we should live and proceeded to introduce us to Cole Valley.
This condominium was the first condo we visited, and we immediately fell in love with it. We looked at many places over the next two weeks but finally settled on 1131 Shrader St. and never regretted it. We lived here about one-half of the time for 10 wonderful years. Some of the things we love:
The shopping area on Cole Street with its numerous restaurants, a wonderful bakery, a small grocery store, Cole Hardware, and a pharmacy. All of this was only one block away - easy walking distance.
Close to some of the best parks in SF - many within walking distance – Golden Gate, with its many museums; the San Francisco Botanical Garden, Twin Peaks, and Tank Hill with some of the best views across San Francisco. One of my favorite walks was to take the dogs around sunset to Tank Hill.
Good public transportation. Muni, the N Judah only 3 blocks away, which got you downtown in 15 minutes and Chase stadium in 20. The bus stop is less than 1 block away at Parnassus and Shrader. And Uber, Lyft, etc. were always around as they hung out at Parnassus Hospital, 6 blocks away. We would drive over from Berkeley, park our car in the garage, and never see it again till we went home.
The neighborhood is one of the friendliest and safest I’ve ever encountered. And dog friendly. We have two dogs who loved to play with their pals at a small park near the Muni-stop (3 blocks away).
One block away is a wonderful elementary school with an entire block filled with tennis courts, and a soccer and baseball field.
But it was the condo itself that we loved with its open space, and windows in the living room that gave the apartment much of its charm. The owners before us had done a re-model of the whole apartment and upgraded the electricity and the bathroom. I landscaped the back yard, which gets a lot of sun for San Francisco. I loved spending time in the summer warmth reading and entertaining friends there, The kitchen. However, it was not re-modeled. We re-modeled it in 2020 (Yes, during the pandemic). Among its features that I truly love are the induction stove top, the combi-steam oven, and the built-in coffee machine. These appliances take time to learn to use, but I love them. The manuals are in the kitchen and if you have questions, I would be glad to help.
